However, bone loss can occur over time (this usually begins around 5 years but can be seen earlier or later). Peri-implant mucositis is bleeding, swelling, and/or infection around the implant. Peri-implantitis is more advanced and includes bone loss around the implant. Implants with inflammation and bone loss are more difficult to treat than teeth with periodontal disease due to the small thread design and surface characteristics. We try to save these implants with early intervention using a combination of non-surgical and surgical treatment. However, If more than 50% of the implant threads are affected, treatment is less predictable and these implants are likely to fail. Early treatment is critical for success. |
